Denis Durand, Managing Director of Jamaica
Infrastruture Operators, local operators of the Toll
Road makes a presentation to a motorist at the
duuring the One Millionth Passge celebrations of the
Spanish Town leg of Highway 2000, held at the
Spanish Town Toll Plaza on Thursday June 23, 2005 |
KINGSTON, June 21—Just six months after its official
opening, the Spanish Town Toll Plaza will celebrate its
one-millionth passage on Thursday, June 23. “We are
surprised that the usage of this section of Highway 2000 has
exceeded expectations. We anticipated a gradual increase in
usage, however motorists travelling between Spanish Town and
Kingston have been quick to see that the Highway offers
considerable advantages in travel time,” said Denis Durand,
General Manager of Jamaican Infrastructure Operator Ltd.
The benefits of the Highway are not only being enjoyed by
its users, as there has also been an impact on traffic on
the Spanish Town Bypass. “Since the opening of the Spanish
Town leg of Highway 2000, there has been a reduction in the
traffic on the Spanish Town Bypass. After a review, and
discussions with stakeholders, the National Works Agency
took the decision in March to revert to two-way traffic flow
in the afternoons,” said Petra-Kene Williams, Acting Manager
Customer Service and Communications at the National Works
Agency.
An average of 4,000 vehicles pass through the Spanish
Town Toll Plaza each day, with a large percentage of users
being motorists who live in Spanish Town and its environs
and work in Kingston.

Prior to the opening of Highway 2000, motorists using the
Bypass would have spent as much as one hour travelling
between Kingston and Spanish Town. That trip now takes
around 19 minutes on Highway 2000.
“For me, its faster, safer, cheaper and more comfortable,
a timely response to an age old problem in the effort to
foster meaningful development,” said Allison Hamilton a
daily user of Highway 2000.
There has also been an increase in T-Tag sales, Highway
2000’s pre-paid toll pass. “The number of T-Tag customers is
steadily increasing as the electronic tag considerably
reduces the time it takes to pay the toll,” said Mr. Durand.
T-Tags are available at the sales offices at the Vineyards
and Spanish Town toll plazas.
Highway 2000 is a four- to six- lane controlled access
toll motorway with several interchanges and intersections.
Thirty-three kilometres of the Highway are now operational
from the Sandy Bay to Mandela Highway. When complete,
Highway 2000 will connect Kingston with Montego Bay and Ocho
Rios. |
