It's 5 Million & Counting
Just
under two years after the inauguration of Highway 2000 the
Five Millionth Passage in the Class 1 category (vehicles
under 1.7m) occurred on Wednesday January 26, 2005 at the
Vineyards Toll Plaza.
It was about 9:30 a.m. that the five millionth vehicle
entered the Vineyards Toll Plaza. The unsuspecting driver of
a 1996 Daewoo Cielo, Mrs. Erica Maddix was accompanied by
her brother, Mr Leon Harris. They were on their way to
Bodles, St. Catherine to inquire about bee keeping. Mrs.
Maddix, a former Assistant Human Resource Manager, now a
Master’s student at the University of Technology, said “The
Lord seemed to have something in store for me this morning.”
Her brother highlighted that had he been driving he
“probably would have been going either too fast or too slow,
” and was therefore happy that she had insisted otherwise.
Welcoming
Mrs Maddix to the Toll Plaza were the Hon Robert Pickersgill,
the Minister of Transport and Works, Mr. Trevor Jackson,
Managing Director of TransJamaica Highway; Dr. Wayne Reid,
Managing Director of NROCC, and Mr. Denis Durand, Managing
Director of Jamaica Infrastructure Operator.
Mrs. Maddix received prizes of $5,000.00 T-tag credit
from JIO; $5,000.00 gas from Total; $5,000.00 auto detailing
from Detail King; $5,000.00 bill payment from Paymaster;
five new tyres; and an auto inspection by ASE certified
mechanic, Andre Scott. According to Mrs Maddix, who has been
driving since 1971, her gifts “could not come at a better
time.”
Minister Pickersgill said,” Highway 2000 has several
benefits in terms of savings on the cost of operating your
vehicle and, of course, savings in time. In its construction
and design, Highway 2000 is engineered for safety. Because
this is a divided roadway, motorists do not navigate against
on-coming traffic. So with good driving sense and a
well-maintained vehicle, Highway 2000 presents a premium
motoring experience.”
