TransJamaican Highway Limited Urges Safety on Highway 2000

KINGSTON, December 28, 2005 — Arising from recent motor vehicle accidents which have led to fatalities on highway 2000, Transjamaican Highway Limited (TJH) is imploring motorists and general road users to practice safe driving habits and use extreme caution, when using the Highway. Drivers using the Highway should ensure that their vehicles are always properly maintained, and should make the necessary checks before commencing their journeys.  We at Transjamaican Highway Limited encourage the adoption of these practices not only when driving on Highway 2000 but as a matter of course, on all routes/roads.

The majority of these accidents are attributable to poor vehicular maintenance in particular, neglect of tyre maintenance, as well as a blatant disregard for prescribed speed limits.  Tyre failure stemming from poor tyre maintenance has contributed to 57.1% (of the) accidents on Highway 2000 since it's opening in October 2003.  Vehicles travelling at the prescribed speed on the Highway require a high level of both mechanical and tyre fitness.

In light of the tragic deaths, we are again imploring the motoring public using Highway 2000 to, for the rest of 2005 and in the coming year, give due regard to the speed limit and to habitually carry out maintenance on their vehicles, in order to help save lives.

The Management of Highway 2000 regrets the loss of lives on the Highway and express condolences to the families of those who have lost lives.
