The Highway 2000
Project comes precisely at a time, which is critical to the
development of the country’s road network. In recent years, the
Ministry of Transport and Works has embarked on a rigorous programme
to improve the conditions of existing roads. In many instances, new
roads have been constructed.
The construction of
Highway 2000 is consistent with the overall development plan for this
Ministry. The completion of this expressway will be extremely
beneficial to the nation as it is proposed to stem the rural-urban
migration drift, and as a consequence, significantly reduce traffic
congestion in some areas while enhancing the road transportation
system in other areas.
Some of the
well-publicized projects undertaken by the Ministry include the
construction of the Melrose Hill bypass, the Old Harbour bypass, and
of course the North Coast Highway. The latter involves improvement
of the country’s road network from Negril to Portland via Montego
Bay, St. Ann and St. Mary.
A newly-established
National Works Agency (NWA) has been charged with the responsibility
of further development as well as complete rationalization of the
country’s road linkages including traffic management schemes for
Kingston, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Mr. Ivan Anderson, Executive
Director of the NWA, sits on the Coordinating Committee of Highway
2000, thus providing a very important link between the Project’s
Development Unit and the Ministry of Transport and Works.
Taking this into
consideration, the Ministry is ready and committed to the
development of a solid and vital relationship with the Highway 2000
Project Team to ensure the smooth implementation and efficiency of
this national effort.
